Two friends were walking through the woods when they came across a huge, deep hole.
“Wow,” one of them said. “That looks really deep.”
“It sure does,” the other replied. “Let’s throw a few small rocks in and see how deep it is.”
They tossed in a handful of pebbles and listened.
Nothing.
“No sound at all,” one of them said. “This hole must be incredibly deep!”
They found a couple of large rocks, about the size of footballs, and threw them into the hole.
They waited…
And waited…
Still nothing.
The two men looked at each other in amazement.
Then one of them spotted a large railroad tie lying in the weeds.
“Help me carry that over here,” he said. “If we throw that in, it has to make some noise.”
Together they dragged the heavy railroad tie to the edge of the hole and pushed it in.
Again…
Not a sound.
Just then, a goat suddenly came charging out of the woods at full speed.
It raced past the two men without slowing down, leaped into the air, and disappeared straight into the hole.
The two friends stood there in complete shock.
A few moments later, a farmer walked out of the woods and asked,
“Have either of you seen my goat?”
“You sure did!” one of the men replied. “It came running out of the woods like crazy and jumped right into that hole!”
The farmer shook his head.
“That couldn’t have been my goat,” he said.
“My goat was chained to a railroad tie.”
