An elderly Scottish Jewish man decided it was finally time to retire and take up golf.
He applied for membership at a local Scottish golf club.
About a week later, he received a letter saying his application had been rejected.
Curious, he went to the club to ask why.
The secretary greeted him and said,
“You do know this is a traditional Scottish golf club, don’t you?”
“Aye,” he replied. “And I’m just as Scottish as anyone here. My name is MacTavish.”
She continued,
“You’re also aware that on formal occasions our members wear kilts?”
“Aye, I wear a kilt too.”
“And you know that nothing is traditionally worn underneath the kilt?”
“Aye, I know, and I follow the tradition.”
She nodded.
“Our members also use the steam room together without clothing.”
“Aye, I do the same.”
She hesitated before asking,
“But you’re Jewish, correct?”
“Aye.”
“So you are circumcised?”
“Aye, that’s right.”
The secretary sighed.
“I’m very sorry, but some of our members wouldn’t feel comfortable because you’re… different.”
The old man shook his head and replied,
“Aye, I’ve heard you have to be a Protestant to march with the Orange Order, and a Catholic to join the Knights of Columbus. But this is the first time I’ve ever heard that you have to be a complete fool to join a golf club!”
