An elderly man living alone in Bradford wanted to plant his yearly tomato garden, but the ground was too hard for him to dig.
His only son, Paul, who had always helped him with the garden, was currently in prison.
The old man wrote him a letter.
Dear Paul,
“I’m feeling pretty sad because I don’t think I’ll be able to plant my tomato garden this year. I’m getting too old to dig the garden myself. If you were here, I know you’d help me like you used to.”
Love, Dad
A few days later, the old man received a reply.
Dear Dad,
“Whatever you do, don’t dig up the garden. That’s where the bodies are buried.”
Love, Paul
At 4 a.m. the next morning, police officers arrived and dug up the entire garden. They searched everywhere but didn’t find a single body.
Eventually, they apologized to the old man and left.
Later that day, another letter arrived from Paul.
Dear Dad,
“Go ahead and plant the tomatoes now. That’s the best I could do under the circumstances.”
