Murphy, an elderly furniture dealer from Dublin, decided to expand his store’s collection.
He traveled to Paris, where he met with several manufacturers and chose some new furniture he thought would sell well back home.
After making his purchases, Murphy stopped at a small bistro to celebrate with a glass of wine.
The restaurant was crowded, and the only empty chair was at his table.
Soon, a beautiful young Parisian woman approached and spoke to him in French. Murphy couldn’t understand her, so he smiled and gestured toward the empty chair.
She sat down.
Murphy tried speaking English, but she didn’t understand him either.
After a few minutes of trying to communicate, Murphy grabbed a napkin and drew a picture of a wine glass.
The woman nodded.
Murphy ordered her a glass of wine.
After they finished their drinks, Murphy drew another picture on a napkin—a plate of food.
She nodded again.
They left the bistro and found a quiet café with a small band playing romantic music.
After dinner, Murphy drew a picture of a couple dancing.
The woman smiled, nodded, and they got up to dance.
They danced until the café closed and the musicians began packing up.
When they returned to their table, the woman picked up a napkin and drew a picture of a four-poster bed.
To this day, old Murphy has no idea how she figured out he was in the furniture business!
