A sweet elderly woman made lunch for her husband every day.
For the past 40 years, she had made him the same favorite sandwich Italian bread with turkey, American cheese, pickles, onions, mustard, and mayonnaise.
At lunchtime, her husband would sit down, take a bite, and she would ask,
“How’s the sandwich, dear?”
Every single time, he would reply,
“It tastes fine.”
Then he would quietly finish eating with a slightly disappointed look on his face.
After years of seeing the same reaction, his wife decided it was time for a change.
The next day, she made him a ham and cheese sandwich on wheat bread.
Surely, she thought, this would surprise him.
He sat down, took a bite, and when she asked,
“How’s the sandwich, dear?”
He gave the same answer.
“It tastes fine.”
And once again, he ate with the same disappointed expression.
The following day, she tried something different.
This time she made a sandwich with salami, pepperoni, fresh vegetables, and vinaigrette dressing.
He took a bite.
“How’s the sandwich, dear?”
“It tastes fine.”
Same answer. Same expression.
Finally, the next day, she had enough.
She decided to make the most unusual sandwich she could imagine.
She toasted the Italian bread until it was almost burnt.
Then she piled on peanut butter, peppers, onions, strawberry jam, turkey, ham, corned beef, olives, and a handful of random seasonings.
“If this doesn’t get a different reaction,” she thought, “nothing will.”
Her husband sat down, took a bite…
His eyes suddenly widened.
He took two more bites, looked up at his wife with the biggest smile she had ever seen, chuckled, and said,
“Finally! Something original in this sub!”
