Dave took Mary out for a romantic dinner, and their conversation eventually turned to marriage.
Dave had been saving money for an engagement ring, but since he was in graduate school, he also badly needed a new computer.
Mary was very understanding.
She told Dave that they had the rest of their lives to get engaged, so he should use his savings to buy a computer instead.
As they were finishing dessert, Dave suddenly reached into his pocket and pulled out an engagement ring.
Mary was completely surprised.
