“Do you like my dress?” a little girl asked a woman who was passing by.
“My mommy made it just for me,” she said, with tears in her eyes.
“It’s a beautiful dress,” the woman replied gently. “But why are you crying?”
The little girl answered softly,
“After Mommy made this dress, she had to go away.”
The woman smiled kindly.
“Well, with a sweet little girl like you waiting for her, I’m sure she’ll be back soon.”
The little girl shook her head.
“No, ma’am. You don’t understand. Daddy said Mommy is in heaven with Grandpa now.”
The woman suddenly understood.
She knelt down, wrapped the little girl in a warm hug, and together they cried for the mother who was gone.
After a moment, something unexpected happened.
The little girl wiped away her tears, stepped back, and began to sing.
Her voice was so soft it was almost a whisper, yet it was the sweetest song the woman had ever heard.
When she finished, the little girl smiled.
“My mommy used to sing that song to me before she went away. She made me promise to sing it whenever I felt like crying, and she said it would help me feel better.”
She spread her arms and said proudly,
“See? It worked. My tears are all gone.”
As the woman prepared to leave, the little girl gently tugged on her sleeve.
“Can you stay for just a minute? I want to show you something.”
“Of course,” the woman replied.
The little girl pointed to a small spot on her dress.
“Right here is where Mommy kissed my dress.”
Then she pointed to another place.
“And here… and here… and here.”
“She told me she put all those kisses on my dress so I would always have one whenever I got hurt or felt like crying.”
At that moment, the woman realized she wasn’t simply looking at a little girl wearing a dress.
She was looking at a child wrapped in her mother’s love.
A mother who knew she would not always be there had left behind something far more precious than fabric.
She had stitched her love into every thread and left a kiss for every future tear.
The dress was no longer just clothing.
It was a lasting reminder that a mother’s love never truly leaves the heart of her child.
