Timmy is in second grade, learning subtraction, when his teacher decides to test him.
Teacher:
“Timmy, if I have five cats and give you two, how many cats do you have?”
Timmy:
“Three.”
Teacher:
“No, Timmy. If I have five cats and give you two, I have three left. Five minus two is three. Now, if I have five cats and give you three, how many cats do you have?”
Timmy:
“Four.”
Teacher:
“No, that’s not right. What if I have five cats and give you all five? How many cats do you have?”
Timmy:
“Six.”
Teacher:
“That’s not correct! I only gave you five cats.”
Timmy:
“Yes, it is. I already have a cat.”
